A step towards the teaching excellence

 Micro-teaching demonstration class

As a part of our teacher education program, we had the privilege of attending a demonstration class conducted by our seniors, which offered valuable insights into the essential skills of effective teaching. The session provided an overview of microteaching, a method that allows teacher trainees to practice and refine specific teaching techniques in a controlled environment. This experience not only helped us understand the practical application of these skills but also motivated us to enhance our own teaching abilities.

Microteaching is a short, focused teaching session where trainees instruct a small group of peers for a brief period, typically 5 to 10 minutes, focusing on a particular skill. It provides a platform for receiving constructive feedback and self-reflection, which is critical for improving teaching performance. During our demonstration class, we observed various microteaching techniques being employed, such as stimulus variation, questioning techniques, and the effective use of visuals and technology.

Our seniors demonstrated ten essential teaching skills during the session, which are crucial for fostering a productive learning environment. These included skills like creating engaging introductions, using the blackboard effectively, incorporating positive reinforcement, and explaining concepts clearly. Each of these skills was presented by a different senior from various departments, showcasing their unique approaches to teaching. Anagha Jiji from the Mathematics Department engaged students with thought-provoking questions, while Devika S.  from the Natural Science Department used voice modulation and visual aids to maintain interest.

Additionally, the class incorporated more advanced skills such as the use of ICT tools and probing questions to stimulate critical thinking. Greeshma Reghunath from the Social Science Department demonstrated the integration of technology, while Haritha Krishnan R. used probing questions to clarify misunderstandings and deepen students' understanding. The session also emphasized the importance of a strong closure, summarizing key points and reinforcing the lesson objectives.

Overall, the demonstration class was an eye-opening experience, providing us with practical knowledge about how to apply microteaching techniques effectively. It not only equipped us with a deeper understanding of the skills necessary for becoming effective educators but also inspired us to continue refining our teaching practices. This session has undoubtedly prepared us to create engaging, interactive, and impactful lessons that cater to the diverse needs of students.
