Learning Experience in Micro - teaching
Micro - teaching Phase II
As a teacher trainee, delivering a 9-minute micro-teaching lesson on the skill of set induction for the topic of number sequences was a highly rewarding experience. I chose to begin the lesson with a short, engaging story to captivate my peers' attention and introduce the concept of number sequences in a memorable way. The story I used revolved around a character who discovered a mysterious pattern while organizing numbers, which naturally led to the discussion of sequences. This approach not only piqued my peers' curiosity but also allowed me to showcase how a well-structured narrative can help set the stage for more complex mathematical ideas. To my surprise, the story had a more profound impact than I anticipated—many of my peers expressed how the narrative helped them visualize number sequences in a way they hadn’t before, making the lesson more engaging and accessible.
The experience of using a story for set induction extended beyond my expectations because it demonstrated the power of context in learning. By placing the concept of number sequences within a relatable and creative narrative, I was able to break down the complexity of the topic. I could see that my peers were actively thinking about the number patterns in the context of the story, which made it easier for them to grasp the core idea of sequences. I also realized that a well-thought-out introduction can greatly influence how students perceive and engage with the content. As a teacher trainee, this reinforced the idea that set induction isn’t just about grabbing attention; it’s about creating a mental framework that makes the lesson more approachable and meaningful.
Attending my peers' micro-teaching lessons was equally beneficial for my development as an aspiring teacher. I had the chance to observe how they applied various teaching skills, from questioning techniques to classroom management, and how they approached set induction in their own lessons. These observations helped me understand the importance of micro - teaching being used in classrooms.

Observation Class |
As a teacher trainee, conducting a micro-teaching lesson on the skill of stimulus variation for the topic of rectangles was an insightful experience. My goal was to demonstrate how different teaching methods, such as varying the tone of voice, using visual aids, and incorporating gestures, could enhance student engagement and comprehension. Since the lesson was only 8 minutes long, I focused on key aspects of the rectangle, like its properties and real-life applications, while using various stimuli to maintain my peers' attention. I was particularly conscious of shifting my tone and incorporating hand movements to illustrate the sides and angles of the rectangle. The feedback I received highlighted that the varied stimuli made the concept clearer and more engaging, which boosted my confidence in using this skill in future lessons and also thee need to improve my voice modulation skills.
On the other hand, attending my peers’ micro-teaching lessons as a student was equally valuable. Observing different teaching styles and how my peers used various skills in their own lessons was a learning experience in itself. Reflecting on these moments allowed me to better appreciate the importance of balancing each and every skill in keeping the students engaged and facilitating them to have a deeper understanding.
Overall, both delivering and observing micro-teaching lessons have helped me refine my teaching skills. As a teacher trainee, it was a chance to experiment with different techniques in a low-stakes environment, gaining direct feedback on how to improve. Meanwhile, as a student, the opportunity to observe and analyze the strategies of my peers taught me valuable lessons These experiences have collectively shaped my approach to teaching, helping me understand that effective teaching is a dynamic and responsive process that requires ongoing adaptation to meet the diverse needs of students.

A step towards the teaching excellence
Micro-teaching demonstration class
As a part of our teacher education program, we had the privilege of attending a demonstration class conducted by our seniors, which offered valuable insights into the essential skills of effective teaching. The session provided an overview of microteaching, a method that allows teacher trainees to practice and refine specific teaching techniques in a controlled environment. This experience not only helped us understand the practical application of these skills but also motivated us to enhance our own teaching abilities.
Microteaching is a short, focused teaching session where trainees instruct a small group of peers for a brief period, typically 5 to 10 minutes, focusing on a particular skill. It provides a platform for receiving constructive feedback and self-reflection, which is critical for improving teaching performance. During our demonstration class, we observed various microteaching techniques being employed, such as stimulus variation, questioning techniques, and the effective use of visuals and technology.
Our seniors demonstrated ten essential teaching skills during the session, which are crucial for fostering a productive learning environment. These included skills like creating engaging introductions, using the blackboard effectively, incorporating positive reinforcement, and explaining concepts clearly. Each of these skills was presented by a different senior from various departments, showcasing their unique approaches to teaching. Anagha Jiji from the Mathematics Department engaged students with thought-provoking questions, while Devika S. from the Natural Science Department used voice modulation and visual aids to maintain interest.
Additionally, the class incorporated more advanced skills such as the use of ICT tools and probing questions to stimulate critical thinking. Greeshma Reghunath from the Social Science Department demonstrated the integration of technology, while Haritha Krishnan R. used probing questions to clarify misunderstandings and deepen students' understanding. The session also emphasized the importance of a strong closure, summarizing key points and reinforcing the lesson objectives.
Overall, the demonstration class was an eye-opening experience, providing us with practical knowledge about how to apply microteaching techniques effectively. It not only equipped us with a deeper understanding of the skills necessary for becoming effective educators but also inspired us to continue refining our teaching practices. This session has undoubtedly prepared us to create engaging, interactive, and impactful lessons that cater to the diverse needs of students.
