Growth, Gratitude & Goodbyes

 TEACHING PRACTICE PHASE - I

Weekly Reflection - 10

Day 41 (06 october 2025)

This day was a significant test of responsibility as our mentor teachers, Sajeev Sir and Smita Miss, were away on a study tour, leaving us to fully manage the day. I successfully conducted my achievement test for Class 8B during the third period, covering previously taught Mathematics portions, and the students responded confidently, reflecting a solid understanding of the concepts.

Beyond the classroom, we smoothly handled the routine noon meal duties and then coordinated a lively skit practice for the students' upcoming performance, fostering great teamwork and enthusiasm among them. The day was a valuable exercise in independent management, proving to be both productive and well-managed before we wrapped up our dispersal duties and signed out at 4:15 p.m.

Day 42 (07 october 2025)

October 7th, 2025, marked my forty-second day, and it was a prime example of our team successfully navigating a low teacher count due to the Class 10 educational tour. Arriving at 9:15 a.m., I immediately took on substitution duties in the forenoon to ensure the school's normal routine remained undisturbed and also helped the other teachers in arranging the library books.

After assisting efficiently with the noon meal distribution, the highlight of the day arrived during the fifth hour: we coordinated and conducted a School-Based Activity  titled "മാറുന്ന ജീവിതങ്ങൾ ," focused sharply on raising crucial awareness about child labour. The students' enthusiastic participation was truly impactful; their empathy and sincere efforts in presenting this socially relevant theme made the program profoundly meaningful. Concluding the activity by thanking the participants for their excellent cooperation, we returned to our afternoon responsibilities, maintained discipline, and left the school at 4:15 p.m. after dispersal duties, feeling satisfied for having led such a purposeful initiative.

Day 43 (08 october 2025)

October 8th, 2025, marked the forty-third and final day of my Phase I teaching practice, a day rich with nostalgia and fulfillment. Arriving at 9:15 a.m., we immediately took on extra substitution duties to manage the low staff count, ensuring the school day ran smoothly despite the emotionally charged atmosphere of our last working day.

We assisted with the noon meal distribution and continued with routine responsibilities, including organizing the classrooms, but the true highlight came in the afternoon - distributing sweets to the teachers and staff as a small token of gratitude for their constant support. Their reciprocal valuable feedback and kind words made the farewell truly special.

After meeting the Principal and completing the final signing process, we left the school at 4:15 p.m., concluding a wonderful and memorable journey that significantly boosted our learning, confidence, and professional growth.

From calm classrooms to creative projects and a powerful finale—ended the journey on a high!

 TEACHING PRACTICE PHASE - I

Weekly Reflection - 9

Day 38 (29 september 2025)

After signing in at 9:30 a.m., the day began beautifully with a confident and efficient morning assembly led by Class 10B. My main focus was the third period in Class 8B.

The school atmosphere was notably calm, which we utilized during the noon hour to assist smoothly with the midday meal distribution. Adding to the relaxed vibe, the high school sections were busy with orientation sessions for Classes 8, 9, and 10, guiding them on the various higher secondary courses available—a crucial step for their future. The day remained remarkably productive and peaceful, allowing us to manage our responsibilities efficiently. We wrapped things up by helping with the dispersal duties, signed the register by 4:15 p.m., and headed off, enjoying a pleasant conclusion before the pooja break officially began.

Day 39 (03 OCTOBER 2025)

Today marked our energetic return after the Pooja holidays, and while the student strength was expectedly low, the day was anything but quiet!

After signing in, I headed straight to my duties. Though the classroom was a little less full than usual, the students who did attend were incredibly engaged. The afternoon brought a fun blend of activities. First, we smoothly managed the midday meal distribution, ensuring everyone was served efficiently. Then, we switched gears entirely for a special project: we were tasked with creating a video reel for the upcoming Little Kites state-level competition! We spent a great block of time recording students performing various ICT-based activities, which was a blast.

Finally, we rounded out the afternoon by conducting a focused skit practice with Class 8 students for their important upcoming performance on Child Labour. We wrapped up the day with our regular dispersal duties and signed out, leaving the school at 4:15 p.m. Despite the lower crowd, the mix of classroom challenge and creative projects made the day incredibly engaging and productive!

Day 40 (04 OCTOBER 2025)

Saturday, August 4th, 2025, marked our final day of regular teaching sessions, and it was packed with meaningful activities! Arriving at 9:00 a.m., I taught my last class for Class 8B, concluding the chapter on Algebraic Solutions of Equations with an ICT-based lesson. This session was observed by my mentor, Sajeev Sir, who offered encouraging feedback on my effective use of PowerPoint and provided valuable, constructive suggestions for enhancing my teaching strategies—a truly insightful learning moment!

Despite the low attendance typical of a working Saturday, the afternoon remained busy; after assisting with noon meal duties, we conducted a vital conscientization programme focused on first aid awareness, specifically addressing how to handle shock, fractures, and minor injuries through practical demonstrations and discussions. Wrapping up with dispersal duties and signing out around 4:00 p.m., the day felt incredibly fulfilling, successfully completing both the teaching component and a significant awareness initiative.

Conscientization Program

Act Fast, Act Right: A Conscientization Program on First-Aid Education

Introduction

A conscientization program is an educational initiative designed to create awareness, develop critical understanding, and inspire responsible action among learners on socially relevant themes. In the context of school education, such programs play a significant role in empowering students with essential life skills that extend beyond academics. First aid, being a crucial life-saving skill, is one such area where awareness and practical competency need to be fostered among school children, as they are often the first witnesses to accidents or health emergencies within the school environment.

During the awareness test conducted among high school students, it was found that the overall level of first-aid awareness was only moderate, indicating that while students possessed basic information, they lacked clarity on correct procedures, immediate responses, and practical application of first-aid measures. This gap in knowledge reflects the urgent need for systematic sensitization and hands-on learning experiences. Without proper guidance, students may respond incorrectly during emergencies, which may worsen the situation instead of offering appropriate help. Therefore, a structured conscientization program becomes necessary to enhance their understanding and practical readiness.

Taking into consideration the findings of the awareness test, a conscientization program titled “Act Fast, Act Right : A Conscientization Program on First - Aid” was planned and executed. The program aimed to reinforce correct first-aid practices, equip students with essential emergency response skills, and promote confidence in handling common injuries such as sprains, fractures, shock, and other school-based incidents. Through interactive presentations, demonstrations, and collaborative learning, the program sought to empower students to become responsible first responders, thereby promoting a safer school environment and fostering life-saving competencies among young learners.

Need and Significance

The need for organizing a conscientization program on first aid emerged from the findings of the awareness test, which revealed that the majority of students possessed only a moderate level of understanding of basic first-aid practices. Although students were aware of certain first-aid concepts, many lacked clarity on the correct procedures to be followed during emergencies such as burns, fractures, shock, fainting, or minor injuries. This highlights a clear gap between theoretical awareness and practical readiness, necessitating a focused intervention to strengthen students’ knowledge and equip them with appropriate skills to respond confidently in real-life situations.

The significance of the program lies in its potential to empower students with life-saving skills that are essential for their personal safety and for helping others in times of need. Schools are places where students are actively involved in physical play, experiments, and various activities, making them more vulnerable to accidents. By enhancing first-aid skills, students are not only prepared to take immediate action during emergencies but also develop a sense of responsibility, awareness, and concern for their peers. This contributes to cultivating a safer school environment where students can act as first responders until professional medical assistance arrives.

Furthermore, the program holds educational and social importance, as it promotes health literacy and encourages practical, value-based learning beyond textbooks. Developing competency in first aid at a young age helps students become more confident, proactive, and socially responsible individuals. The conscientization effort also benefits the larger community, as students can extend their knowledge to their families and neighbourhoods, fostering a culture of safety and preparedness. Thus, the program is significant in bridging learning gaps, strengthening life skills, and empowering learners to transform awareness into meaningful action.

Objectives of the Program

  • To enhance students’ understanding of basic first-aid principles and emergency response procedures.
  • To develop practical skills among students for managing common injuries such as  shock, sprains, fractures, etc.
  • To bridge the gap between theoretical awareness and real-life application of first-aid measures.
  • To build confidence and readiness among students to act as responsible first responders during school or home emergencies.
  • To promote a sense of safety, responsibility, and care among students towards their peers and community.
  • To encourage collaborative learning through demonstrations, presentations, and interactive activities related to first aid.
  • To instill health awareness and foster a culture of preparedness and preventive care among school students.
Reflection of the Program

The conscientization program on First Aid, conducted at 2:00 p.m. for Class VIII students, proved to be a highly impactful and informative session. The sequence of events was well-organized, beginning with a silent prayer and followed by a warm welcome by David, which set a positive and respectful tone for the program. The inaugural address by Mrs. Smitha S., Biology Teacher, emphasized the importance of first-aid knowledge and appreciated the initiative taken to educate students on such a relevant life skill. The program successfully achieved its objective of enhancing student awareness by providing clear demonstrations, practical insights, and interactive learning experiences that helped students understand not just what first aid is, but how to perform it correctly during emergencies.

The presentation segment was the core of the program and was highly engaging for the students. Each topic was handled thoughtfully and demonstrated with clarity. David introduced the topic of shock and demonstrated CPR, capturing the attention of students through a live demonstration. Shamna explained sprains, types of sprains, and the immediate first-aid response, followed by a mock demonstration that made the learning process active and memorable. I handled the session on fractures, explaining the causes, symptoms, and step-by-step procedure to manage fractures using sticks and cloth for support, which was demonstrated practically. The R.I.C.E. method was jointly explained with Shamna to reinforce first-aid for sprains and fractures. The felicitation address by Manju Teacher further boosted the morale of the presenters, and the program concluded positively with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Shamna at 2:55 p.m.

The program received positive feedback from both teachers and students. It helped improve students’ confidence in responding to injuries and taught them essential first-aid techniques through practical demonstration rather than theory alone. It also strengthened teamwork, planning, time management, and presentation skills among the organizers. The entire experience proved valuable, reinforcing the need for such awareness programs in schools to build a generation that is informed, alert, and capable of providing timely support during emergencies.

My Role in the Program

As an active member of the organizing team, I played a significant role in planning and executing the conscientization program smoothly. I was responsible for preparing the program schedule and the poster for the event, ensuring that the sequence of events was well-structured and visually appealing. During the presentation segment, I handled the topic of fractures, where I explained the meaning, causes, symptoms, and first-aid steps for managing fractures. I also demonstrated the procedure of immobilizing a fractured limb using a stick and cloth as a splint. Additionally, I jointly presented the R.I.C.E. method, connecting it to both sprains and fractures for student clarity.

I also contributed to the development of the PowerPoint Presentation, creating the slides for my assigned part and coordinating with my peers for overall alignment of content and design. The PPT was successfully completed with equal effort from all members. Through this program, I enhanced my communication, leadership, and coordination skills, while gaining confidence in handling live demonstrations before students. Overall, my role allowed me to effectively integrate planning, teamwork, presentation skills, and practical teaching into a meaningful educational experience.

Conclusion

The Conscientization Program on First Aid Awareness was a purposeful and impactful initiative that successfully enhanced the students’ understanding of basic first aid measures. Through demonstrations, interactive presentations, and practical examples, the session enabled learners to gain confidence in responding to common injuries and emergencies in a calm and informed manner. The involvement of teachers and the active participation of students greatly contributed to the overall effectiveness of the program.

Overall, the program achieved its intended objectives by fostering awareness, responsibility, and essential life skills among the students. It reinforced the importance of equipping young learners with practical knowledge that can benefit them in real-life situations. This initiative also highlighted the value of collaborative planning and execution, and it stands as a model for conducting similar awareness-based programs in the future.
